Organ pipe thefts silence church music

Forty-seven organ pipes have been stolen from a church.

Thieves broke into Leaveland Church, near Faversham, and took the lead pipes.

The cost of replacing them is estimated to be £10,000.

Thefts of lead have increased around the county recently.

Sgt Dave Smith said: “This is a despicable crime.

"Though the offenders may just see this as a petty theft, the impact it has on those that use the church is substantial.

"These pipes are only worth in the region of £50 in scrap metal, but to replace them will cost thousands and until that money can be found, it will leave the church devoid of music."

Sgt Smith appealed for the pipies to be returned to the church.

He added: "We will be making inquiries with scrap metal dealers in the area to see if they have been offered or sold the pipes to try and return them to their rightful place."

The theft was between June 22 and July 6.

Police are also investigating the possible involvement of a blue Transit flatbed lorry which was seen in the area on 30 June 30.
