Stefan Payne was sent-off in his third outing for Blue Square Bet South leaders Braintree on Monday night.

The 19-year-old, who is on loan from Gillingham, was dismissed late in the goalless draw with neighbours Chelmsford City.

Payne netted a hat-trick in his last outing and Braintree boss Rod Stringer defended the striker, after his 77th minute sending off.

"I thought the dismissal of Stefan was harsh," said Stringer. "I’d like to have the chance to see that particular incident again.

Payne is out on loan looking to get valuable minutes on the pitch after finding his chances at Gillingham limited due to the form of current strike pair Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa.
