A KENT farmer says he is shocked and sickened after nine of his newly-born lambs were shot dead in what has been described as a "barbaric act of cruelty".

The 10-day-old lambs were killed at Dean Court Farm, in the village of Westwell, near Ashford.

Each had been shot several times with what police believe to be a rifle.

It is a devastating blow for farmer Guy Lister who has spent countless late nights in recent weeks delivering the youngsters which were worth more than £500.

“To say I am angry is an understatement,” he said. “It was a complete shock and it’s numbing to think someone has done this.

“I can only assume these people were out poaching rabbits in the woods and decided it would be fun to take potshots at the lambs.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them. Det Sgt Matt Rentell said: “This was a barbaric act of animal cruelty which was inflicted on defenceless animals.

“Someone must know who was responsible for this sickening attack. Perhaps they know of someone who went out in that area that night with a rifle. I want to bring those responsible for this to justice.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Sgt Rentell on 01233 896202Alternatively phone Crimestoppers free and in confidence on 0800 555 111.
