New kings of korfball

INVICTA Korfball Club made history this week as they were crowned British korfball kings by beating defending champions Mitcham 23-9 at Buckmore Park. It was a magnificent achievement at the end of only their second season in the National League Premier Division.

Early goals by Tash Trigg and Scott Brooker put the home team into an early lead after three minutes but a penalty brought Mitcham back into the game. Invicta continued the relentless pressure and gradually pulled ahead with an assortment of goals from Rachel Olding, Rob Williams, coach Dave Buckland and his wife Corrine to give them a 13-5 half time lead.

Invicta were in no mood to give up their advantage as Candise Higgins scored twice and James MacDonald got his name on the scoresheet. The home side went into top gear and the former Dutch Hoofdklasse player Corinne Buckland finished top scorer with seven goals.

*The day before, Invicta exorcised the demons of last season's British Korfball Cup final by beating Croydon 18-7 in Norwich.
