A SCHOOL is united in sadness following the death of a 13-year-old Bexley Grammar pupil in a road tragedy.

Year 9 pupil Jessica Mathers was struck by a Suzuki Vitara car shortly after 6.15pm on Friday as she crossed Welling Way, Falconwood, with friends on their way to a sleepover.

Rod MacKinnon, headteacher at the Danson Lane school, said: "Jessica was a lovely girl. She was always very bubbly and had lots of friends.

"She was the type of girl who really enjoyed school and always had a smile on her face. Everyone is in shock."

The school has opened a book of remembrance for pupils to leave messages of condolence.

Mr MacKinnon added: "Our thoughts are with Jessica’s family at this time. They have appreciated the kind messages that have been pouring in.

"All the children are comforting each other and deciding on appropriate ways of commemorating a much-loved friend."

There were a number of witnesses to the collision and a number of local residents attended the scene to offer help.

Paramedics from London Ambulance Service and an air ambulance attended the scene but Jessica was pronounced dead just after 8.30pm.

The driver of the car was treated for shock at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. No arrests have been made. Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to call 020 8285 1574.

If you knew Jessica and would like to add to tributes in Bexley Extra call 020 8308 7403 or email the newspaper at bexleyextra@thekmgroup.co.uk
