Martin Allen is still hoping to add faces to his Gillingham team ahead of their League 2 season

Gillingham kick-off their season proper on Tuesday night and boss Martin Allen hasn’t ruled out the possibility of more arrivals by then.

Allen (pictured) has signed six players so far, with former Jamaican international striker Deon Burton joining the Gills on Tuesday morning.

But Allen hasn’t finished his summer recruitment just yet.

He said: "We are now getting some more players in and hopefully there will be a couple more signings.

"If there are not and they don’t make it, then we will be ready to go whatever."

And Gills chairman Paul Scally, who has been doing the transfer deals along with director of football Andy Hessenthaler, is sure there will be more movement soon.

"There will definitely be more," said Mr Scally.

Allen could wait until the eve of the season and make a move in the loan transfer market.

The Gills begin their season on Tuesday night with a trip to Bristol City in the Capital One Cup – the new name for the League Cup.

Gills’ League 2 campaign opens next Saturday at home to Bradford City. A 3-0 home defeat to Watford on Tuesday night ended their pre-season programme but Allen is quietly confident ahead of the new campaign.

"There are going to be ups and downs, let’s not kid ourselves, right the way through the next 10 months," said Allen.

"The supporters could see from the second half, when we added a few senior players, that we got much stronger.

"We have few injuries and what we have got is minor. Hopefully by the time that Bradford game comes around, we will be at full strength."

The players were given Wednesday and Thursday off but are due back in on Friday.
