Mark Bentley has voted the KM Group’s Gillingham player-of-the-month for December.

Bentley (pictured) has started every league game for the Gills and is back covering in central defence, despite impressing in the opening months of the season on the right wing.

It was his solid performances at the back that prompted fans to vote him player-of-the-month for the second time this season.

"I must be doing something right," said Bentley, who turned 32 on Thursday.

"My form is good and I just do what I normally do which is work hard. Fortunately for me, I have been consistent as well. I’ve just tried to keep it simple.

"I’ve been back at centre-half for a while. Now Matt Fry has had to go back to West Ham, I’ve got it in my head that I’m going to be playing there for a while longer but that’s no problem.

"I just want to play and it’s becoming easier to adapt to centre-half now. The more I play there, the more comfortable I get."

Bentley has more reasons than most for wanting to impress as he is playing for a new contract. His current deal runs out in the summer.

"Hopefully I’m showing the manager what I’m about," he said. "I’m desperate for a new deal."
