Man 'stable' after shooting incident

A MAN suffered a gunshot wound to his lower back at a controversial and unlawful travellers site.

The incident happened at the site off Oak Lane, Upchurch, between Sittingbourne and Rainham.

The 46-year-old was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham where he is said to be conscious and in a stable condition.

Police were alerted to the incident at around 2.30pm on Monday and are appealing for information about the movements and whereabouts of a grey or blue 4x4 vehicle. They also want to find a man known to the victim who left the area in the vehicle. Officers investigating the incident believe he may have left the county.

Det Insp Dave Barnett said: “Firearms incidents of this nature are extremely rare in Kent. This is an isolated dispute, which is under full investigation.

“We think the 4x4 vehicle driven by the suspect left the site and drove along the A2 in the direction of Key Street, Sittingbourne. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle. If anyone has any information that will help us with this investigation please come forward. All calls will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

Upchurch Parish Council chairman Gerry Lewin said: “Clearly this incident will be very disturbing for the people of the village because it is an unwelcome development in an unlawful travellers site. It will make people feel even more uneasy but they should be reassured that the police are treating this as an isolated dispute.”

Caravans moved onto the site in January when hardstandings and tarmac was laid down without planning permission. The site is close to Upchurch Golf Club.

Anyone who feels they can help police with their enquiries is asked to contact Swale Police on 01795 477055 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
