A man has been rescued from the River Medway after he fell into the river at Rochester Bridge.

Two fire engines and a police car attended the scene to help save the 24-year-old.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said they were alerted to the incident by a member of the public at 4.57pm and attended the scene with other emergency services.

It is not yet known how the man ended up in the water, but an onlooker said they had seen a group of people "mucking around" on the bridge before the incident happened.

The bridge, which was closed while the operation took place, was re-opened around 5.20pm after the man was pulled out of the water.
