A 51-year-old man appeared before Medway magistrates today charged with the murder of elderly Gravesend woman Thirza Smith.

Joseph Jameson, of Shorts Way, Rochester, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

It is alleged that he murdered 72-year old Mrs Smith, of Gerald Road, Gravesend, on Friday in Almon Place, Rochester. Mrs Smith died following an incident involving a car.

Mr Jameson will appear at Maidstone Crown Court next Monday when he will enter a plea. He is also charged with the theft of a handbag, contents unknown.
