Major road shut after triple smash chaos

Three separate crashes led to the closure of one of the county's main roads.

All the accidents happened near the Chestfield tunnel on the Thanet Way.

All three happened in heavy rain and hail - but it is not known if they are connected.

The coast-bound carriageway was closed from the junction with the A2990 at Whistable to the A291 Canterbury Road near Herne Bay.

Traffic was diverted along the old Thanet Way - but road works along that stretch are already leading to long tailbacks.

The road has since reopened. Nobody was seriously hurt.
