A multi-vehicle smash has closed part of the M2, causing delays for motorists.

The London-bound carriage of the motorway has been shut between junction three for Chatham and junction two for Strood, causing a queue of traffic back to junction four for Gillingham.

It is thought four vehicles have been involved in the crash, which happened just before 1pm.

Firefighters had to extinguish a blaze in one of the cars. Kent Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service are also on the scene.

A police spokesman said at least one person will be taken to hospital, but the extent of their injuries are unknown.
