Laying her soul bare

As soon as someone pops up with a jazzy, blues-tinged voice, immediately they draw comparisons with Amy Winehouse.

Yet there is something of that easy talent which comes across in Katerina Georgiou’s music. The University of Kent student even looks a bit like the late Back to Black star.

Katerina taught herself to play piano five years ago on an antique her parent bought as a piece of furniture and soon developed her take on the jazz-blues style which is so popular at the moment.

High profile slots quickly came along at Hoxton’s Underbelly, Kings Cross’ Monto Water Rats and Lounge on the Farm in Canterbury.

Claiming to have written two albums worth of material already, the unsigned singer-songwriter has put together an EP, Brighter Shade of Grey, which she launches next week.

Hear Katerina’s ballad-style lyrics, with a hint of pop-rock, at the Ballroom, Canterbury, on Thursday, May 17, the day the EP comes out.More details on 01227 760801.
