Firefighters were called to a block of flats after a man and woman who had been drinking started making toast and fell asleep.

The property in Unicorn Walk, Greenhithe was full of smoke when crews arrived shortly before 2am today.

The pair, who are thought to be in their early twenties, had managed to put the blaze out by the time firefighters had arrived and crews then used a pressure ventilation fan to clear the flat of smoke.

Neither suffered any injuries and a baby who was in the flat was being looked after by a neighbour.

A firefighter who attended the incident said: "The toast was cremated, when I touched it it crumbled away. There was a hell of a lot of smoke from just four bits of toast.

"Cooking after drinking is dangerous, people should avoid cooking after drinking alcohol."
