A £10 million Kent History Centre is to be built combining the county archive, a family history area and library.

It will replace the County Central Library at Springfield, Maidstone, the archive centre at County Hall and Maidstone library.

Architects have designed a glass-fronted building, with landscaped piazzas, which will sit off the White Rabbit Roundabout near County Hall.

The cost is expected to be at least £10m of which £4m will come directly from KCC. The shortfall will be made up by the sale of the old Springfield library for housing.

It is unclear what will happen to Maidstone Library, which was built in the 1960s and is no longer deemed suitable for storing books and important records.
