Kent gran who drew Morocco in World Cup sweepstake flies flag outside house and celebrates with fans in Trafalgar Square

When you draw a country in a World Cup sweepstake, you're always willing them to win - but one Kent gran has taken things to another level.

Carole Blacher, 76, has gone mad for Morocco, flying the nation's flag outside her house with pride and even celebrating with fans in Trafalgar Square.

The African side face France tomorrow night in the semi-finals - and Mrs Blacher is willing them to go all the way.

The nan-of-six, from Orpington, told KentOnline she bought the flag straight after picking out Morocco in the family sweepstake.

"I had a Three Lions flag for the Lionesses, and it worked for them so I thought, who knows it might work for Morocco," she said.

“I initially supported them because of the sweepstake. But I have grown to really like them as a team. They have such a spirit.

“I have now started reading about the team.

"I think it’s lovely that a lot of the team players bring their mums to the games and give them a kiss when they score.

“I think they are brilliant. I have really warmed to them.”

Mrs Blacher was unable to watch Morocco's shock victory over Portugal in the quarter-finals, but still celebrated in some style.

“I happened to be up in London, so I had missed their game," she said.

"We passed Trafalgar Square and we saw all these Moroccan fans celebrating, so I just had to join in!”

A video of Mrs Blacher dancing with the fans in London has been shared widely on social media.

“The reaction from people has been wonderful," she said.

"It has been really lovely to see all this positivity on social media for a change.”

So, has Mrs Blacher really been Morocco’s lucky charm in this World cup?

The former psychology teacher certainly thinks so.

“Without realising, I’ve recently been informed that I’ve been flying the flag upside down," she said.

“But I have spoken with a family recently and we have decided to leave it as it is. It’s worked well so far! So why change it?

“I think I’m definitely Morocco’s lucky charm with my upside-down flag!”

If Morocco beat France tomorrow night, they face the challenge of Croatia or Argentina on the world’s biggest stage.

“If they win the World Cup I will definitely be celebrating," Mrs Blacher added.

“Firstly, by drinking lots and lots of prosecco! And I’ll invite some friends over so we can celebrate together.

“I really hope we’ll be toasting to Morocco winning the World Cup this Christmas.”
