Kent drew their opening LV= County Championship match of the season despite being in the driving seat for much of the encounter with Yorkshire at Headingley.

Yorkshire were forced to follow on 173 runs in arrears after Kent had posted a massive 537-9 declared in their first innings but the Tykes batted stubbornly in their second innings, reaching 146-4 before bad light led to an early finish.

Yorkshire had started the final day on 316-6 but, after adding 31 runs to their overnight total, the Tykes' tail was destroyed by new paceman Charlie Shreck who took four wickets in the space of 18 balls as the home side were dismissed for 364.

Skipper Rob Key had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on but Yorkshire openers Joe Root (76) and Joe Sayers (43) then put on a century stand to frustrate Kent's victory chase.

Their hopes were temporarily revived when Adam Riley and Shreck picked up two wickets apiece before the weather had the final word.

Kent had to settle for a 10-point haul but coach Jimmy Adams would have been able to draw plenty of positives from his first game in charge.

Apart from Shreck's six-wicket haul, all-rounder Matt Coles (pictured) hit an unbeaten century Kent's innings, Key fell three short of his hundred, and there were also half-centuries from three of the county's other new recruits, Brendan Nash, Mike Powell and Mark Davies.
