A man was talked down from Rochester Bridge by police last night after threatening to jump.

The 39-year-old was spotted standing on the Strood-bound carriageway shortly before 8pm and a worried member of the public called the police.

Officers closed the bridge so they could speak to him and get him to safety almost an hour later.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “The man was removed from the bridge and it was reopened at approximately 8.49pm. The man was taken to hospital for precautionary measures.”
