Gillingham defender John Nutter is eyeing a promotion spot after becoming a regular in defence under Andy Hessenthaler this season.

Nutter (pictured) will be facing his former club Aldershot at the Recreation Ground on Tuesday night and feels the Gills can bide their time in the promotion race.

He said: "You don’t have to be in a rush to be third now. You want to be up there third or second, or even first, at the end of the season with the last kick.

"It’s where we are at the end of the season that we care about most."

Nutter almost scored a last-minute winner for the Gills in the 0-0 draw against Shrewsbury at the weekend, but the keeper turned his free-kick over the bar.

"It would have capped his 150th appearance off nicely.

"I hit the shot quite clean but it went straight to the keeper," he said.

"If I had hit it a couple more yards either side it might have crept inside the post but it wasn’t to be. Hopefully I will get another chance.

"It would have been nice to have scored on my 150th appearance, like I did on my 100th appearance against Stockport. I’m quite proud to have played 150 games for Gillingham and to have scored would have been nice."
