Kent Cricket Club chief executive Jamie Clifford has cooled speculation that director of cricket Paul Farbrace could be set to leave the club to become head coach of Sri Lanka.

Reports from the sub-continent linked Farbrace – who previously worked as an assistant with the Sri Lankan side from 2007 to 2009 – with a return to the international game to replace interim coach Stuart Law, who is set to switch to Bangladesh.

However, Clifford said the reports were nothing more than rumour at this stage.

He said: "As a club we’ve heard nothing direct from Sri Lanka but I have seen what has been in the papers.

"We are realistic and when you have a guy like Paul Farbrace, who has enjoyed success with an international side in the past, then he is always going to be on the shortlist when another job comes up."

He added: "For now nothing is happening. There is always intense media coverage in Asia but we have not got to the stage where anything further is happening and I understand their cricket board has been disbanded, so nobody is quite sure what is happening there."
