How to improve your motoring skills

GREEN Flag Motoring Assistance is encouraging drivers to review their motoring habits for safer driving and fewer breakdowns in 2004.

Spokesman Nigel Charlesworth said: "There are many simple ways motorists can improve their driving habits, most of which cost little or nothing and can help prevent accidents, breakdowns and legal wrangles."

1. Hang up. Don't use your mobile phone handset while driving. Use a hands-free kit or better still voicemail to avoid distractions.

2. Be prepared. Allow plenty of time for journeys to avoid stress and the temptation to speed. Plan your route before you set off.

3. Stay sober. Despite Government warnings, drinking and driving has increased in recent years.

4. Brush up on the rules of the road. Most motorists forget the Highway Code after passing their test.

5. Keep calm. If you feel yourself getting hot under the collar, take a break to calm down.

6. Give your car a makeover. Green Flag Motoring Assistance helps thousands of motorists who break down due to poor maintenance.

7. Belt up. Always use safety restraints..

8. Be alert. If you feel yourself becoming sleepy while driving, stop for a nap.

9. Take cover. Ensure you have breakdown cover so you won't be left stranded if the worst happens. Visit www.greenflag.com or call 0845 246 1557 for information on Green Flag Motoring Assistance cover levels.
