A car caused extensive damage to the front of two properties before fleeing the scene.

Police confirmed patrols responded to reports of damage on the A28 Shalmsford Road, near Chilham, on just after 6.15am on Tuesday.

“We heard a huge crash outside and the next thing I saw was a vehicle reversing off our driveway and heading off,” said owner of one of the properties, called Thornham, Julia Gower.

She added: “a concrete post and three fence panels have been knocked down outside the front of our house and as the car was reversing, it collided with our neighbour’s back gate and brick wall, knocking them down as well.

“I can’t imagine how much it’s going to cost in repair bills.”

A broken headlight and rear bumper from the vehicle, which police believe to be either a Volkswagen Bora or Passat, were left behind at the scene.

Officers are now investigating who the vehicle belongs to and appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
