Hessenthaler set to name unchanged Gillingham team for Carling Cup first round match against Norwich City at Carrow Road

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler is unlikely to have any of his walking-wounded back for Tuesday night's cup trip to Norwich.

Captain Barry Fuller (knee), defender Garry Richards (ankle) and Andrew White (hamstring) are dealing with short-term injuries, while Dennis Oli (hamstring) remains out and Simon King (ankle) is a long-term absentee.

Loan striker Cody McDonald has a foot injury but would have missed out anyway as parent club Norwich and the Gills have an agreement in place not to play him. That same arangement means Simeon Jackson should also be ruled out, although there is no written agreement.

Stanley Aborah could come into contention if his international clearance comes through in time. That was still being waited for on Monday.

"I don’t think anybody else will be back," said Hessenthaler (pictured). "I think the game will be too close. We may have the Ajax boy who we have taken for a month. Other than that there will be nobody else."

Aborah was suffering with a virus before the weekend and it is understood several other players have picked this up, which could lead Hessenthaler into making changes to the line-up.

The Gills last visited Norwich at the end of April and a 2-0 win for the Canaries guaranteed them the League 1 title. With Norwich now a Championship side and Hessenthaler's men in League 2 it would be a big shock if Gillingham won the game.

And Hessenthaler is hoping his luck of old continues.

"I hope coming back I am the lucky omen on that front," he said.

"We have had some really good runs when I was at the football club and maybe that could happen on Tuesday and we could cause an upset and have a decent cup run. That would be good for the finances as well."

Norwich will be without Andrew Crofts, who has now been called up for Wales.

Despite his absence, and that of Jackson, Hessenthaler knows the trip will be a major test.

"They lost their opening game and It could go two ways. Could it be that we go there with no pressure on us and there is a bit extra pressure on them? It could be that they are so hungry and disappointed that they got beat that they take it out on us. Let’s hope it goes our way.

"It’s a game we should enjoy. It’s a fantastic stadium and pitch and I believe Gillingham went there and did quite well last season but when Norwich scored they fell apart. We’re capable and the boys are looking forward to it.

"It’s a good game for us and there is no real pressure. I would love to go there and put a real show on, try and pass the ball and enjoy it and who knows."
