Here's our fairly unique Talking Point story - it's not rocket science!

With all due respect, at the end of the day I personally absolutely shouldn't of said "it's a 24/7 nightmare".

Now - is this one of the most annoying sentences you've read today? According to a new list of the top 10 most irritating expressions it certainly could be.

Researchers have compiled a list of the most grating phrases based on their database of phrases on the Oxford University Corpus.

The Corpus alerts them to new words and phrases and can tell them which expressions are disappearing. It also shows how words are being misused.

• But what do you think? Do you get hot under the collar when you hear the phrases below? Are there any you think are even more annoying? Or does language really not matter that much as long as people understand what you mean? Vote for your (least) favourite in our poll and send us your views via the 'Make a comment' button - both at the bottom of this page.

The phrases appear in a book called Damp Squid named after the mistake of confusing a squid with a squib, a type of firework.

Dr Peter Merchant, a language lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University, said: "These phrases are mere fillers and are resorted to almost as a form of punctuation.

"One of the reasons they are irritating is they are resorted to irrespective of who you are addressing. All of them are examples of empty talk and are used unthinkingly.

"If people wrote them down they would realise they were being used to replace thought. They would understand they are saying things that are ungrammatical like 'shouldn’t of' and illogical like 'fairly unique'."
