TWO dogs have been shot dead with an air gun and a young girl may lose an eye after she was shot with a BB gun in a series of incidents at Leysdown on Sheppey.

Police are now appealing to anyone with any information to come forward. They were first made aware of a shooting when a dog was killed in the Shellness area at about 11.40am on Sunday.

On Monday afternoon, at a holiday camp in Leysdown Road, a 15-year-old girl was walking to her caravan when she felt a sharp pain in her eye.

She was taken to Gillingham's Medway Maritime Hospital where she was discharged but doctors have said there is a possibility she may lose her eye. She is currently undertaking a course of treatment at an eye hospital.

The second dog was shot at Shellness beach at 8.10pm on Wednesday. The dog ran home to its owner where it died.

Following Wenesday's incident, police attended the scene and seized a weapon from a nearby property. Enquiries are currently on going and interviews are being conducted.

Chief Insp Ian Hall said: “All of these incidents have caused a great deal of distress to the people involved and we are fully investigating all of the crimes. These circumstances highlight the dangers and damage that can be caused by the use of air rifles and ‘BB’ guns.

“I would advise any parent who allows their child to have such a weapon to think seriously about the consequences of doing so. What may seem like harmless fun could result in a person being arrested for criminal damage or assault.

“Should the girl who is now suffering the after effects of being shot with a BB gun lose her eye we will be treating the crime as an incident of grievous bodily harm. This is a very serious crime that highlights the dangers and consequences of the thoughtless use of air weapons.”
