Jo Kuffour is relishing the chance to reignite his career after Gillingham snapped him up on a three-month loan on Friday.

The move from fellow League 2 side Bristol Rovers could turn into a permanent deal if the 29-year-old striker impresses during his brief stay at Priestfield.

"I want to get back to playing football," said Kuffour, who made his debut for the Gills as a second half substitute in the defeat at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

"I have had a tough couple of months and it has never really happened to me before where I have been left out of a squad for different reasons, arguments with the manager and the chairman.

"I just want to get back to playing football and enjoying myself again.

"I have always believed in my ability. I know I wasn’t left out of the (Bristol Rovers) squad because of ability.

"I just need to get my head down. I am not a disobedient player and I knew the time would come when I could move and just play my football.

"I have watched Gillingham all season and I know a few of them already. I know over the season we will win more than we lose and there is a good squad. We started off sloppy on Saturday but we will put that right.

"We are really good going forward and there are a lot of goals in the team. Saturday was just a blip."

Kuffour, who started his career at Arsenal as a trainee, has also had spells with Swindon, Torquay, Brentford and Bournemouth before moving to Rovers in 2008.

He scored 35 goals in 139 games but this season found himself on the sidelines. His last game before the weekend was at the end of August.

"I feel alright considering," he said. "It is going to take a while for me to get fully match fit but I was quite happy with the way I came on. I wasn’t as far behind as I thought I would have been so I was pleased with that."
