Jo Kuffour opened his Gillingham goal account at the weekend, but admits he’s still not completely fit.

He tore into his former club Torquay on Saturday with a first-half double and an impressive performance but claims he has yet to recover fully from his troubled start to the season at Bristol Rovers.

The livewire striker left the League 2 side for a loan spell with the Gills after being frozen out. He’s gradually rekindling his energy levels and has now found his scoring form.

"I feel like I am getting fitter and stronger in every game," he said.

"I lasted 80 minutes on Saturday but there are good signs for me and I can keep progressing and pushing on.

"I am still not 100%. I missed a lot of the season, five weekends, and was training with the kids, which doesn’t help. I now feel like I am getting back into it.

"It is always nice to score against your old club but I thought the lads were terrific in the first half. They pressed them early from the start and luckily I was in the right place at the right time on both times."

Of his first goal, which came after just six minutes, he said: "I anticipated the header and that’s how I score most of my goals, by anticipating things. I was just glad to have stuck my first one in for the Gills.

"It was a great ball in from Rooney for the second goal. I thought he was terrific – I thought the whole team were terrific."
