Danny Kedwell knew exactly where he was going to put his match-winning spot-kick – thanks to Northampton defender Ashley Westwood.

The pair have come head-to-head in recent seasons in the Conference when Kedwell has appeared for AFC Wimbledon and Westwood for Kettering and Wrexham.

Kedwell only realised when he spotted Westwood giving visiting keeper Sam Walker some advice about the spot-kick. The Gills striker had a penalty saved for the Dons when he played against Westwood’s Wrexham two years ago.

"The centre-half Westwood I have played against before and he was telling the keeper where to go," said Kedwell.

"I knew exactly where I put it before (when I played against him) so I thought I’m not going that side again.

"I thought I’d smash it down the middle. It was obvious what he was telling him.

"I knew I was smashing it but when I saw him talking to him I had forgotten about that. But I remembered I played against him before so he did me a favour!"

With the penalty awarded in the 90th minute, it was the difference between one point and three for the Gills.

But Kedwell admitted the nerves were more likely to get to him earlier in a game than at the death.

"I didn’t feel that nervous," he added. "I knew what I wanted to do. Things like that don’t affect me, it’s more when it is 0-0 or early on in the game that I get a bit more nervous."
