Danny Kedwell has started the season with three goals in two games but Gillingham boss Martin Allen still wants to see more.

The Gills forward captained the side in the 3-1 win over Bradford and scored a quality opener to get his team up and running.

Allen believes the striker needs to be scoring more goals from open play, as he did on Saturday.

The Gills manager Allen said: "He played well and that first goal changed the game with an exquisite finish.

"Since I have been here he has been a top class professional and he has done every training session.

"He is hungry, he is a listener and he is a sponge for information. He helps all the other players but there is still an awful lot to come from him. He is still working hard on his body and his fitness levels. The rewards won’t come to him for perhaps another three months."

Kedwell struck 26 goals for AFC Wimbledon in the 2010/11 season which prompted former boss Andy Hessenthaler into splashing out around £60,000 for the striker.

But his 14 goals last season for the Gills weren’t good enough for Allen.

"It is not good enough that he only scored seven goals last year," said Allen. "He scored some penalties but he only scored seven in open play. I had a chat with him about that and he has got to get better. Let’s hope he gets more, because if he doesn’t get more he won’t play will he?"
