Gillingham boss Martin Allen felt his side could have taken maximum points at Morecambe on Saturday after stepping it up in the second half.

The Gills were a goal down at half-time but Bradley Dack’s 52nd-minute equaliser levelled things up and Allen’s side bossed the remainder of the match.

"It was a great point," said the Gills manager (pictured). We played really well in the first half and had a couple of good opportunities.

"They had only lost once in five months at home, it’s a tough place to play football and the pitch was very heavy.

"We didn’t deserve to be 1-0 down at half-time, that’s for sure, and they only got near our goal once. Then in the second half we had the legs, energy and running power of Charlie Allen, Bradley Dack and Anton Robinson

"We stepped it up a little bit in the second half and played higher up the pitch. Perhaps we were a bit more direct to get into the final third quicker and it was an exquisite finish into the corner on a really bobbly pitch.

"That technique was practised on the training ground and in the technical sessions that we do with the players. It was fantastic."

Dack almost scored a winner late on, with an 80th-minute header, that went narrowly wide.

"Had that gone in I think it would have been a deserved win," said Allen.

"They had pressure but they didn’t really create anything, which we have seen a million times this season. It is all well and good having the ball but it is still hard to find chances against us because we are such a great unit of men. Credit to all the players, I think they were superb."

Allen made four changes to his starting 11, with both Danny East and Steve Gregory rested. The pair were at Morecambe, along with Adam Birchall, but not in the matchday squad.

"I rested Gregory, who has been superb, but I totally rested him," said Allen.

"East played on the right of midfield the other night but he isn’t really a right midfielder, he’s a full-back, and it’s tough on him."
