Gillingham manager Mark Stimson keen to ease the burden on striker Simeon Jackson

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has admitted the club are relying too much on leading striker Simeon Jackson.

Jackson, pictured, has scored 11 of Gillingham’s 24 goals so far this season and Stimson is keen to sign a partner to help share the burden.

Dennis Oli has been paired with Jackson recently, but he has failed to find the target in 13 matches. Fellow front man Mark McCammon, whose season has been plagued by injury, has also yet to find the net in 10 games.

“It’s hard to rely on the boy (Jackson) all of the time,” said Stimson.

“It’s not for the lack of trying. Dennis Oli does his best and gives everything.

“We want someone else up there looking to be able to score a goal. They are gold dust and they are the ones who cost the money and nobody wants to release.

“No team will let players come out for the FA Cup unless you pay the money that certain teams want and unfortunately we haven’t got that money.”

A deal for a Premier League striker fell through last week after the club insisted on inserting a fee on the loan.

It was another blow for the Gills boss, who has had a series of setbacks in his chase for additional firepower. Stimson also revealed that Southend’s James Walker was someone he was chasing just a few weeks ago.

“We couldn’t agree a deal,” said Stimson. “He went out to Hereford for a month and unfortunately for us he came back (on Friday) and looked lively. He was full of tricks."
