They say never go back but for Gillingham legend Andy Hessenthaler, there was no way he could turn down the chance to return to the Priestfield hotseat.

In charge for more than 200 matches after replacing Peter Taylor as Gills manager in June 2000, Hessenthaler stepped down more than four years later with the club four points from safety and second from bottom in the Championship.

It was a decision he regrets now but one that he is willing to put right second time around.

"In hindsight, and that’s a wonderful thing, I was a bit hasty," admitted Hessenthaler, who has been in charge of non-league Dover for the past three seasons.

"Maybe I should have stuck at it and tried to turn it around. But my heart was telling me that it needed a change and because I felt so much for this football club, I wanted to make sure the right person came in.

"In the end, it didn’t happen unfortunately. Stan (Ternent) and Ronnie (Jepson) gave it their best shot and weren’t far away, to be fair to them.

"There is that element that I want to go back and finish off what I believe I could do. Let’s hope that is the case. It won’t be for the lack of trying."
