Andy Hessenthaler admitted he couldn’t criticise Adebayo Akinfenwa over his second-half penalty miss – as he hadn’t seen it.

The Gills boss doesn’t watch spot-kicks from the touchline so didn’t see it when Akinfenwa, pictured, had his penalty saved by Shrewsbury keeper Chris Neal.

"I don’t watch penalties," revealed Hessenthaler.

"I never have and I don’t know why. All I knew was that Bayo was taking it and I was delighted as he is a forward.

"He has missed it, so what? Frank Lampard has missed a few in his time.

"The fella has been great for us since he has been here. We’ve won the game 2-0 so that penalty doesn’t matter. He is a terrific lad and a pleasure to work with.

"When we missed the penalty, it went through my mind that it could be the turning point for them. But fortunately we got another one and tucked it away."
