Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler will be working on getting the blend right after a goalless draw at Macclesfield on Saturday.

The last three games have yielded just one goal, but at the same time the defence have not conceded.

It is in stark contrast to the Gills’ earlier form, where they scored 12 goals in the four previous games and conceded nine. It’s a quandary that the Gills manager knows he has got to get right.

Hessenthaler (pictured) said: "We had been showing a lot of quality in the final third for a few weeks and scoring a lot of goals. All of a sudden we are keeping clean sheets now and not scoring so many. It’s about getting the balance right."

The Gills have been held to goalless draws in successive League 2 games but hold on to seventh spot in the table.

Hessenthaler appears to have found the right formula in defence. Garry Richards and Andy Frampton are forming a solid central defensive partnership with Joe Martin and Charlie Lee on the flanks. It’s an area the Gills boss is delighted with.

"Ross Flitney (the goalkeeper) didn’t have a shot to save (on Saturday) but the boys in front of him were terrific," said Hessenthaler.
