Ross Flitney believes League 2 is still there for the taking.

The Gillingham keeper produced a match-winning performance against Oxford to help the club to three points and a step closer to the leading clubs in the division.

He said: "The league is tight and there is not anyone really running away with it just yet.

"Crawley are in good form but everyone else has just been letting themselves down rather than them being outstanding.

"If a few more teams can put a good run together then they will get caught quite quickly."

The Gills climbed to fifth with a 1-0 win over Oxford and after losing just once in their last six games Flitney (pictured) believes things are now coming together.

"We have never been short of confidence," he said.

"The league is still so tight. We may have lost a few but there was never a need to panic and I am sure we will keep pushing on.

"Once the final whistle went we were thinking about Swindon (on Tuesday night) and we will hopefully go away again and get three more points.

"There were so many players coming in here through the summer and it does take time. You have to get used to different players and I think we gel really well.

"We had a good week (before Saturday) with a few activities away from the training ground, relaxing and having fun, and it’s really paid off."

Flitney was determined to keep a clean sheet on Saturday after the team conceded goals in each of the previous 10 games.

"The clean sheet is the important thing for me," he said.

"The boys dug in tremendously and I couldn’t fault any of them. The fans were also great, like an extra man, and in the end we defended well and deserved the win.
