Gillingham have had a bid for a second striker turned down.

Having had an offer for Dagenham striker Paul Benson rejected, a bid for another player has been turned down and boss Mark Stimson admitted it is proving difficult to get his man.

He said: "It’s been stated that we have made a bid for one player (Benson) and also one other.

"Unfortunately, both bids have been rejected but we may go back with something else, only time will tell.

"We’re trying to improve the squad because we need to, as it’s going to be a tough division in League 1.

"We want to compete, we don’t want to be down near the bottom too often fighting for our lives. We want to be up there and putting in some good performances.

"The nucleus of the squad is very good and if we can add to that we have a good chance."
