Gillingham first-team coach Nicky Southall writes exclusively for the KM Group

Sadly we missed out on the play-offs last weekend but we will be finishing with a points total that last year would have been enough.

It’s an improvement but ultimately not good enough to make that top seven.

We’ve been knocking on the door for the last two years and hopefully next year will be our year.

We have blooded a number of young players like Connor Essam, Jack Evans, Callum Davies and Paulo Gazzaniga this season. They have had a taste of it and know what to expect at this level.

We threw everything at Northampton in the second half, looking for that winner, but unfortunately it didn’t happen and we were gutted.

For a time on Saturday, Torquay were beating Crewe and that would have given us an opportunity to go into the last game with a chance.

We had people with mobile phones on the bench and then we found out that Crewe had scored a late equaliser and that killed us.

The changing room was quiet afterwards but it wasn’t just about Saturday’s game, it was over a season.

Even Bayo Akinfenwa came up to us and said how gutted he was for us. That shows what kind of a guy he really is.

We spoke all season how we have been decimated with injuries, suspensions and illnesses – which we have had a lot. Curtis Weston has been off ill this week.

We are not hiding behind the injury situation and are sick of talking about it but it does affect the rhythm of the team and the continuity, the shape and togetherness.

You need to get a nice understanding between the three units – defence, midfield and attack – but if you keep swapping players around, then you have no chance of creating a firm understanding.

After the game at the weekend it will be a busy period for a week or two, getting the players retained we want to keep and looking at transfer targets.

We know where we need to improve.
