Gillingham have been drawn away to last season’s League 1 champions Norwich City in the first round of the Carling Cup.

The Gills were in the same division as Norwich last season but when the new campaign starts two divisions will separate them.

Gillingham met Norwich three times last season but were unable to beat them in any of those encounters.

The home league match at Priestfield ended in a 1-1 draw, while the game at Carrow Road saw the Gills lose 2-0. The teams also met in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with Norwich winning 1-0.

Last season the Gills made it to the second round of the competition. They pulled off a surprise in round 1 with a win over Plymouth before losing to Premiership Blackburn in round two.

The first round match takes place on the week commencing August 9.

On Thursday morning Gillingham's League 2 fixtures will be announced.
