Darren Dennehy's departure from Gillingham leaves two players fighting it out for the vacant shirt.

Dennehy (pictured) has filled the left-sided central defensive role admirably during a loan stint from Cardiff City but Saturday’s game at Norwich was his last for Gillingham.

Now youngster Tom Wynter, a naturally left-sided player, and the more experienced Josh Gowling will fight it out to join Mark Bentley in central defence for the final two games of the season.

Boss Mark Stimson said: "Someone needs to step in and do half as good a job as Darren.

"It’s a tricky position, especially if you don’t do it correctly and concentrate. That’s one of the biggest problems you get at this level – concentration.

"You need to concentrate for the whole game, not 80 minutes or 60 minutes, especially if you’re playing in a position that’s not your position.

"There are a couple who could play and we hope they turn up next weekend, concentrate and go out there focused.

"We’ve got Josh or Tom and we’ll have a look in the week to see who we think is up for that challenge. It’s between youth and someone who has played a few games."

Irishman Dennehy played 19 games for the Gills in a three-month loan spell.

"He has been outstanding for us," said Stimson.

"He’s a big player and he wins his headers, he has a decent left foot.

"Hopefully we won’t miss him too much next weekend and the last game because he is a left footer and he plays that position really well. It’s going to be up to someone else to do as good a job."
