Gillingham defender Matt Lawrence admits he and the team need to be helping with the goals

Matt Lawrence was delighted to see Cody McDonald rescue a point for Gillingham at Burton, but called on the rest of the team to help out the strike force.

More than half of Gills’ 55 goals this season have come from McDonald or Adebayo Akinfenwa, and Lawrence believes others should be assisting.

Lawrence admits he is first on the list of those not scoring enough, but came closer than ever on Saturday with a 16th- minute header which was cleared off the line.

It was almost three years to the day since his last goal in professional football – for Crystal Palace with a 90th-minute equaliser against Sheffield Wednesday.

Lawrence said: "To have two forwards in double figures is perfect, but the trouble is they are the two who get the goals. There aren’t too many more chipping in with them, myself included.

"I came close on Saturday but I should be scoring goals. Garry Richards should be, Kevin Maher should be. One of our problems is that it is just Cody and Bayo (Akinfenwa) who predominantly score the goals."

He added: "I have got six in 600 so I am due one!"

The Gills drew their seventh consecutive match on away soil at Burton and it was a frustrating afternoon.

"That was definitely a missed opportunity," Lawrence said.

"A lot of other teams around us lost and so it would have been a fantastic three points and could have maybe moved us up another place in the division.

"After being a goal down at half-time we did well to fight back and we showed our team spirit. In the end it was good to get a point and it is much better to come away with one point than none.

"It’s our seventh away draw on the trot, but to be fair to us a lot of those have come against teams higher up in the league.

"We have drawn at teams like Shrewsbury and we’ve proved that we are hard to beat. We want to win, obviously, but I would rather draw than lose."
