Gillingham defender Matt Fish believes his game is benefiting from the experience of being a full-time footballer.

Fish (pictured) moved to Gillingham in the summer and is tasting life in the Football League for the first time.

He spent the last three seasons at Dover, following a football apprenticeship at Crystal Palace and is reaping the rewards from his time in the professional game.

"I have got better since I came here and my touch and awareness has improved a lot since," said the 22-year-old.

"I need to just keep playing games. Last year I played 50-odd games but it is different full-time. Last year I had no competition for my place at Dover but I have that now and have to train well to keep my shirt.

"I feel that I have held my own and adapted well and the more games I play, the more experienced I will become."

Fish will make his eighth appearance for the Gills at Torquay on Saturday as he continues to fill the right-back role left vacant following the injury to Barry Fuller.

He said: "I came here to play football and get in the team but at the start of the season Baz (Barry Fuller) wasn’t doing anything wrong," said Fish.

But Fuller’s injury, which has now ruled him out for the season, then gave Fish his chance.
