Josh Gowling is an injury doubt for Gillingham ahead of their League 2 match against Oxford on Saturday.

The Gills central defender (pictured) took a blow in the drawn game at Stevenage and also twisted his ankle, which means Garry Richards is set to start a game for the first time in nine months.

"There was swelling and we put him on crutches just to keep him off it," said Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler on Tuesday. "He looks doubtful for the weekend."

Richards played for over an hour at Stevenage and the Gills boss was impressed.

He said: "He’s been out for a long time but we had to throw him into the lion’s den a bit because Stevenage isn’t an easy place to play.

"They do rely on long balls forward and their strength up front. Garry was terrific."

Simon King, who still has not made a competitive appearance for the Gills since their 2009 Wembley League 2 play-off final win, could be set for a place on the bench.

Hessenthaler may also have extra attacking options for the weekend with both Dennis Oli and Andy Barcham set to declare themselves fit.

"There is every chance he (Barcham) will be involved at the weekend in some capacity, which is good news," said Hessenthaler.

"Dennis has been training well, although he is rusty. We chucked him on (against Stevenage) and it’s a run-out for him. The more work he does, the fitter and stronger he is going to get."
