Gillingham chairman Paul Scally was delighted his club’s 18-month wait for an away win came to an end on Saturday.

After missing the home defeat to Crewe last weekend, Mr Scally (pictured) changed his plans on Friday so he could watch the game at Oxford.

And his decision paid dividends as he watched the Gills collect their first win away in 35 matches.

"I changed a few flights on Friday and I think the players were pleased to see me there," said Mr Scally after the 1-0 victory.

"I’ve been working quite closely with them since the Dover defeat and the boys got what they deserved.

"It was a difficult last 15 minutes but our defence were outstanding, in fact the whole team were outstanding and worked ever so hard.

"I’m pleased for everyone at the club. It’s been a difficult start to the season."
