Captain Adam Barrett applauded the support from the Gillingham fans who turned out in force on Saturday.

The Gills were backed by 1,449 fans in Cheltenham – the club’s biggest away support of the season.

But a 1-0 defeat meant they were unable to celebrate the club winning the League 2 title.

Barrett said: “The support was fantastic and they have been fantastic all season. They were hoping we would be lifting the trophy and it would be lovely to now do it at home but a big thank you from all the players because they have really helped.

“It has been a big collective effort from everyone. We’ve got a job to do next week now, let’s get it done.”

The Gills would have clinched the title with a draw or better against Cheltenham but they faced a team chasing promotion themselves and weather conditions that made things tough.

Barrett said: “Conditions were difficult and the pitch was bobbly. There was a swirling wind and it did make it a difficult game and probably not the prettiest to watch but it is a tough place to go.

“We are disappointed but now we dust ourselves off and it would be nice to do it next week at home, against Wimbledon.”
