Points are all that matter for Gillingham now, insists boss Martin Allen.

His side have been in the League 2 promotion places all season and just 11 games remain.

And Allen (pictured) admits style has to take a back seat as the Gills chase automatic promotion and the league title. He said: "Has it been great to watch? No. No, no, no it hasn’t, but at the moment it’s get the job done and do the basics right.

"Don’t give away silly goals, keep your concentration and every point we pick up is a good point.

"It is tight and it is difficult. We want everyone to play with freedom and confidence and knock the ball around playing great football but now take a reality check and get down to the real thing.

"We have seven weeks to go, we are sitting top of the league and everyone now expects us to go up. It’s game on and difficult for the players but it will get easier."

The Gills have unexpectedly dropped points at home throughout the second half of the season but Allen knows his team just have to keep their nerve.

He said: "It is a little bit frustrating but it is happening right through all the leagues with the teams at the top."
