Defeat on Saturday put Gillingham’s title celebrations on hold, but boss Martin Allen is wasting no time in getting down as he prepares for what he now sees as the biggest afternoon in his career.

“Let’s not whinge, let’s not complain, it’s part and parcel of the game,” said Allen, pictured with Cheltenham boss Mark Yates, after Saturday’s 1-0 reverse.

“We take it on the chin. One little error has cost us the game and we have to live with it. They won and we’ll hold our hands up and move on. Let’s get onto the next one and wish them luck.

“The first thing we did after coming off the pitch was, ‘right, let’s start preparing for next Saturday in front of our supporters, to make it happen’. That is the plan. That’s what we will do.”

A point from Gills' last two games will see them crowned League 2 champions. They could also win it if Port Vale fail to win either of their last two.

The odds are heavily in Gills’ favour and Allen can’t wait for Saturday.

He said: “I have had some magical moments fighting against relegation and keeping clubs up just above the line, but this is the one that is set up for the biggest Saturday afternoon of my career."
