Gills boss Mark Stimson is hoping to have sealed a deal with Luke Rooney after holding talks with the player’s representatives.

Stimson and chairman Paul Scally will discuss a counter-offer submitted on behalf of the player. The club has offered Rooney a new contract that extends to the summer of 2013.

Rooney put in a strong performance during the midweek reserve match against Millwall – a big improvement on his previous showing.

"Last week in the reserve team game he should have done a lot better," said Stimson.

"(On Tuesday) he passed the ball when he had to, dribbled when he had to and at the end he played a fantastic through ball for the last goal.

"Hopefully something will be sorted out by the weekend."
