Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler believes now is the time for his team to deliver.

Hessenthaler, pictured, wants to see an end to the inconsistency shown in his side after they slipped to 10th in League 2 last weekend - starting with Saturday's game at home to Northampton.

Automatic promotion remains the target and Hessenthaler said: "This is where the season really starts. We are 16 games in and heading into the winter period now and towards Christmas.

"This is where the real characters come out in your team. You can come unstuck because of the weather. It’s a game of football, which they (the players) should love doing but certain things can dictate people’s minds.

"It will be for me to see what characters we do have and we may have to think about changing the team selection in certain games."

The Gills are five points off the automatic promotion places but Hessenthaler added: "We have a good squad of players but can’t be playing catch-up.

"We’re six points down from the 30-point target which the boys have looked at over the first three months. That would have got us in the top three.

"We need to make that up over the next few months. Come January we need to be in that top three."
