Gillingham assistant manager Ian Hendon wants his team to get the League 2 season off to a flying start.

The Gills were handed an opening day clash with Cheltenham at Priestfield for the second straight year when the fixtures were announced on Friday.

The teams drew 1-1 thanks to Adebayo Akinfenwa's late equaliser and Hendon is determined to claim all three points this time around.

"It's amazing how they came out," admitted Hendon, pictured. "We need to start brighter and get going as it took us 13 games last season - it's important how we start.

"Maybe it's a wake-up call for us this time and we need to make sure we don't take them lightly, not that we did that last season.

"I remember that game clearly. The goal we conceded came from a free-kick, Alan Julian didn't come and Josh Gowling hesitated, so Wes Thomas toed it in.

"Bayo got the equaliser from a long throw, althought it was a bit dubious how much of a touch he got."
