A CHARITY gig is being held later this month in memory of a keen young sportsman who died last year.

Colin Newton, lead singer and guitarist of a Kent band called Bob, is organising the music event as a tribute to his friend, Tom Kiernan, and to raise money for cancer charities.

Tom, 26, of Woodlands Road, Gillingham, was a keen cricketer, footballer and ruby player. He died after suffering a seizure caused by a brain haemorrhage, which was linked to a cancerous growth on the back of his leg.

Colin, 25, who works as a plumber and lives in Folds Close, Wigmore, near Gillingham, aid: “I was friends with Tom and went to school with him. We also used to play football together.

“I was very upset when he died and wanted to organise a charity event to pay tribute to him and raise money for research into the disease that killed him.

“We hope that it will be a great night with loads of excellent music that will hopefully raise a lot of money.

“My band is also helping me organise the event but we are appealing for prize donations for the raffle if anyone can help us.”

Other bands performing on the night are Quadmyre and Broadband. There will also be a raffle and a DJ until close.

The event will be held on Sunday, April 30, at the Cricketers Club, Sturdee Avenue, Gillingham from 7pm.

There will be a collection on the night and donation boxes are at The Cricketers until the night of the gig.
